What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI assistant built by OpenAI and launched in November 2022. It remains one of the most widely used AI chat products for writing, coding help, research summaries, brainstorming and image generation — all through a simple chat interface. Exact active-user figures change often; treat any “most used” claim as directional, not a measured market share.

As of October 2026, Free and Go use Luna models for everyday chat (GPT-6 Luna rolling out from 8 October 2026, replacing GPT-5.6 Luna; unlimited text chats on Free/Go, with separate limits for uploads, images, voice and tools). ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) unlocks GPT-6 Sol (rolling out from 7 October 2026) with Medium/High thinking levels in chat, ChatGPT Images 2.6 (GIF animation; rolled out 4 Nov 2026), projects, and GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex — not as the default chat model. Pro (from $100/month) adds GPT-6 Astra (GPT-6 Pro) in Chat. Always re-check chatgpt.com/pricing and OpenAI’s help centre because model names and plan gates move quickly.

Update (9 October 2026): OpenAI released GPT-6 in ChatGPT’s Chat tab on 7 October 2026, with “Intelligent UI” — answers that can combine text with visuals, charts, tappable buttons and forms. Per OpenAI, rollout began on 7 October for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise (powered by GPT-6 Sol) and expands to Free and Go from 8 October (powered by GPT-6 Luna); it is gradual, so some accounts may not see it yet, and Enterprise access depends on admin settings. OpenAI announced no plan price changes with this release and says Intelligent UI has no separate usage quota; the models in ChatGPT Work and Codex are not changing. Update (5 November 2026): OpenAI launched Images 2.6 on 4 November 2026 in ChatGPT and Codex across all subscription tiers, with animated GIF support and roughly 50% faster generation. Update (6 November 2026): OpenAI launched GPT-6 Cyber on 5 Nov for approved Daybreak Red API/Codex customers only (not Plus/Pro Chat). On 3 Nov 2026 Prisma launched an official ChatGPT plugin that connects ChatGPT and Codex to Prisma ORM, Prisma Postgres and Prisma Compute so you can build, set up a database and deploy from one prompt (Prisma: ChatGPT plugin). This page is an editorial listing check against OpenAI’s published pricing and docs (refreshed 9 October 2026) — not a dated lab notebook of every prompt we ran. The free tier is still the right first stop for most people; Plus is the usual upgrade when you hit image, thinking or upload limits; Pro is for heavy GPT-6 Astra / agent workloads. Every fact below comes from the vendor’s own pricing, help or release-notes pages, checked 28 Oct 2026. Editorial listing check, not a hands-on test.

Exact price

• Free $0 — “unlimited text chats” (subject to abuse guardrails) with limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and Codex (chatgpt.com/pricing).
• Go $8/month on OpenAI’s US pricing page (local currency and prices in some countries); may include ads (OpenAI Help: ChatGPT Go).
• Plus $20/month, billed monthly only — no annual option (OpenAI Help: ChatGPT Plus).
• Pro three monthly tiers: Pro 100 $100, Pro 200 $200, Pro 500 $500. Ultrafast is only on Pro 500 (OpenAI Help: Pro tiers).
• From December 2026, Plus, Pro and Business usage will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex and measured in tokens; Instant chat will not draw from it, combined remaining usage and reset times will show in Settings → Usage, and you can buy credits if you run out (OpenAI Help: ChatGPT and Codex usage limits).
• Since 27 Oct 2026 iCloud users on all plans can connect iCloud Mail and Calendar to ChatGPT (web, desktop app and iOS) to search email and check or update events; since 30 Oct the iOS and Android apps let you stay signed in to two ChatGPT accounts and switch between them under Settings › Switch account, each keeping its own chats, memory and subscription (ChatGPT release notes).

Usage limits

• Total chat context (shared with system prompt, memory and tools): GPT Instant 27K Free / 54K Go and Plus / 128K Pro; reasoning 256K Go and Plus / 400K Pro. OpenAI puts the usable input at about 12 pages (Free), 40 pages (Go/Plus) and 250 pages (Pro) for Instant (chatgpt.com/pricing).
• Plus “may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand” (OpenAI Help: ChatGPT Plus). On 29 Oct 2026 OpenAI cancelled the planned Pro 200 allowance cut: Pro 200 subscribers on the lower allowance were doubled to match the higher one, Pro 100 and Pro 500 got twice their previous Work and Codex allowance, Plus is unchanged, and Ultrafast stays on Pro 500 only. Eligible Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 subscribers (and Business workspaces with paid seats, capped at $500 a month) can now claim monthly OpenAI API credits equal to their tier ($100, $200 or $500); Plus does not qualify and unused credits expire each cycle (OpenAI Help: API credits benefit). Support cannot reset limits (OpenAI Help: Pro tiers).

Plan limitations

• Ads: Free and Go show ads where OpenAI has rolled them out (its release notes list the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada). Plus and higher plans are ad-free (ChatGPT release notes).
• Custom GPTs: on 11 Sep 2026 OpenAI said it plans to retire custom GPTs across plans and move them to plugins — don’t pay for ChatGPT mainly to use a custom GPT (ChatGPT release notes).
• Models: Chat runs GPT-6 Sol on Plus and above and GPT-6 Luna on Free/Go (rollout from 7–8 Oct 2026). GPT-6.1 Sol is rolling out in ChatGPT Work and Codex (from 29 Sep, Pro first; the pricing page lists it on Plus and, expanded, on Pro) — it is not the default Chat model. GPT-6.1 Terra, a faster, lower-cost model for visual reasoning, computer use and writing, began rolling out in Work and Codex on 26 Oct 2026 for Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu (not Go); it is not in regular Chat (re-checked 2 Nov 2026: still Work and Codex only; API $1 in / $5 out per 1M tokens) (OpenAI: GPT-6.1 Terra; OpenAI Help: Work and Codex). • Research model (checked 2 Nov 2026): GPT-6 Rosalind Research, OpenAI’s life-sciences research model, is available only to a limited set of approved Research organisations in Work and Codex, and through the API as gpt-6-rosalind where separately approved. It is not in the Chat tab, and buying a ChatGPT subscription does not give access (OpenAI Help: GPT-Rosalind).
• Cybersecurity model (checked 6 Nov 2026): GPT-6 Cyber launched 5 Nov 2026. It is a specialised cybersecurity model for authorised vulnerability discovery and exploit development, initially available through the API and Codex only to approved Daybreak Red customers — not a ChatGPT Free/Go/Plus/Pro consumer plan feature. Buying Plus or Pro does not unlock it. OpenAI is also making GPT-5.6 Cyber available to all Daybreak Red customers. (OpenAI: GPT-6 Cyber)
• Images (checked 6 Nov 2026): ChatGPT Images 2.6 launched 4 Nov 2026 in ChatGPT and Codex on every subscription tier (desktop, mobile and web). OpenAI says it is about 50% faster than before and adds animated GIF generation. In the API, gpt-image-2.6-flare and gpt-image-2.6-sunburst are listed at $8 image input / $30 image output per 1M tokens (text input $5; cached image $2 / text $1.25), the same list prices as the 2.5 Flare and Sunburst models. Free still has limited image creation. The DALL·E GPT was retired on 30 Aug 2026 (OpenAI: Images 2.6; OpenAI API pricing; prior Images 2.5 note).

Who should skip it — and what to use instead

• You need a source citation on every answer → Perplexity (Free; Pro $17/month billed annually).
• Your documents are longer than ~40 pages and you are on Plus → Gemini on Google AI Pro ($19.99/month, 1M-token context) or Claude (Anthropic lists up to 1M tokens, varying by model).
• You want annual billing to cut the price → Claude Pro is $17/month billed annually ($200 up front); ChatGPT has no annual plans for individuals.
• Your job is multi-file coding inside an IDE → GitHub Copilot (Pro $10/month) or Cursor.

Job it does: ChatGPT is the general-purpose AI workspace most people should try first — drafting, coding help, research summaries, brainstorming, and (within plan limits) ChatGPT Images 2.6 generation. Free/Go run on Luna (GPT-6 Luna rolling out from 8 October 2026); Plus moves everyday chat to GPT-6 Sol and unlocks Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol (rolling out from 29 Sep 2026) in Work/Codex; Pro puts GPT-6 Astra in Chat for heavier reasoning and agent work.

Who should skip (or not rely on it alone): if you need guaranteed citations on every claim, prefer Perplexity; if you live in Google Docs/Drive, try Gemini; if careful long-form writing is the job, Claude often feels better; if you want an IDE-native coding agent, use Cursor or Claude Code. Skip Pro’s $100–$500 tiers until you have already hit Plus limits.

Concrete limitation: Chat context is shared and plan-capped (OpenAI publishes Instant windows around 27K Free, 54K Go/Plus, 128K Pro, with larger reasoning windows on paid plans). User-input share is smaller once system instructions, memory and tools take space — do not assume a universal 1M window.

Named alternatives: Claude for nuanced long writing; Perplexity for cited live-web research (see ChatGPT vs Perplexity); Gemini for Workspace + Google’s Pro 1M-token window; Cursor for multi-file coding in an editor. ChatGPT remains the best single starting subscription for most people — then specialise.
