What is Midjourney?

Job it does: Midjourney is a paid AI image generator aimed at concept art, campaign visuals, fashion and cinematic stills. Day-to-day you iterate prompts, vary seeds/styles, then upscale and export. The web app is a first-class path; Discord remains available but is no longer required to get started. The default model is V8.2 (default since 24 July 2026), which added a new Edit model that replaces Omni Reference, Character Reference and Retexture; V8.1 added 2K HD images, and Niji 7 (January 2026) is the anime-style model (Midjourney: Version).

Who should skip: skip if you need a forever-free image tool (try ChatGPT’s limited free images or other freemium generators), if you need pixel-perfect product composites with exact logos/faces, or if you only need a one-off meme — a general assistant may be enough.

Concrete limitation: prompt craft still has a learning curve, and Midjourney will not reliably reproduce a specific real person’s face or an exact layout on demand. Always read the commercial-use terms for your plan.

Who should skip it — and what to use instead

• You need free images → ChatGPT (Images 2.6, limited on Free), Gemini (Nano Banana 2.1 in the Gemini app) or self-hosted Stable Diffusion 3.5, free under Stability’s Community Licence below $1M revenue (Stability AI licence).
• You need private output on a small budget → Stealth starts at Pro ($60/month); self-hosted Stable Diffusion keeps files on your own hardware.
• You need an image API → Midjourney’s plan comparison lists none; OpenAI’s GPT-Image-2.6 Flare/Sunburst and Google’s Nano Banana 2.1 are API models (OpenAI API pricing; Google AI: Nano Banana 2.1).
